The Sandra Powell School of Dancing has been teaching ballet in Horsham for over 40 years. Expert tuition in Cecchetti classical ballet is provided in small classes, often accompanied by a professional pianist. Pupils work towards exams awarded by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and are encouraged to take part in regional and national competitions, and enjoy performing at local theatres in shows and galas.
The teaching focuses on developing the dancer as a whole, so as well as building a solid foundation of classical ballet technique, the artistry and musicality of the pupils is also developed. The Cecchetti method of ballet is taught, which was developed by Maestro Enrico Cecchetti. He formulated a series of exercises to develop a dancer from a child to a professional adult, gradually building the complexity and beauty of the movements. This method creates dancers of the strongest of techniques and the most beautiful of lines. His pupils included the Ballet Russes, including Anna Pavlova, and when he taught in London in the early 1900s he tutored Dame Ninette de Valois and Maris Rambert, who went on to found the Royal Ballet School and Ballet Rambert respectively. A very well-known modern student of his method is Darcey Bussell!
